After unplugging the opener, we locked the door in its closed position and began easing the tension out of the springs by releasing the torsion cones in stages. We were extra careful with the broken spring, to ensure no loose pieces were under pressure. Afterward, we cleaned and removed the rust from the spindles, put in the new pair of springs, and reconnected the door for testing.
